For a few years now we have been working with year 5 at Sherston Primary School picking as many crabapples as we can in the locality. We then show the children how we make our delicious Crabapple Jelly and, as well as giving them some of the jelly to sell at their Christmas Fair, we donate 25p from the sale of each jar to the school.
The project all began when Guy, our Managing Director, wanted to get local children involved with the company. "We wanted to let them see inside the place that gives off the unmistakable cooking smell when we're making our onion marmalade but you can't really have 30 children bouncing around a food factory, so this has been the next best thing."
Crabapple trees don't produce fruit every year so it is an adventure finding trees laden with fruit. It has been a pleasure involving the children with our work, and they love learning about the jelly and how it is made. So much so that with part of the money generated by jelly sales, the school is planning on creating its own "environment zone" garden including a crabapple tree.
If you would like to help us raise funds for the school all you need to do is bring your crabapples along to our factory in Easton Grey whereupon we will donate 50p per kilo to the school. Don't forget to buy your Crabapple Jelly either - it's outstanding in a pork sandwich as well as being a fantastic way to help the local community!
